Whether you are preparing to admire the views from the Bastei Bridge or descending into the deep Kamenice River Gorges, one rule always applies in the national park: the sandstone rocks create their own, very specific microclimate.
Even during a hot summer day, the bottom of a canyon can be surprisingly chilly. Here is a brief guide for discerning travelers on how to prepare for a hike while maintaining elegance and comfort.
Footwear is the Absolute Foundation
Forget about flat-soled city sneakers. Even the easiest trails in Tisa Rocks or at Pravčická Gate involve walking on sandstone, which is naturally slippery—and turns into an ice rink after the rain. Sturdy hiking shoes with good traction (ideally waterproof) are an absolute necessity in every season.
The Rule of Layering (Summer & Spring)
If you are traveling between April and September, prepare for temperature fluctuations. While you will feel hot on the sun-drenched viewpoints, as soon as you step into the forest and between the tall rocks, the temperature can drop by up to 10 degrees Celsius (18°F). A light, packable windbreaker and a fleece layer should always be in your daypack.
Winter Specifics (November–March)
The winter landscape of the National Park is magical but demands respect. Aside from very warm clothing, gloves, and a hat, the most important items are microspikes that slip over your shoes. Frozen stone stairs can be highly dangerous without them. Read more in our guide to winter accessibility and opening hours.
