Rising above deep pine forests like a monumental gateway to another world, the Pravčická Gate—spanning 26 meters with a height of 16 meters—is the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe and the undisputed icon of the Czech north.
The Falcon's Nest Chateau and History
Nestled directly beneath the stone arch is another architectural gem: the Falcon's Nest (Sokolí hnízdo) chateau. Built in 1881 by Prince Edmund Clary-Aldringen in just 80 days, it originally served as a luxury lodge for his prestigious guests. Today, you can admire this historical gem up close and take breathtaking photos. (And don't worry about getting hungry after the hike—our tours include a hearty traditional lunch served later at our carefully selected local restaurant away from the crowds).
A Rewarding Hike
The journey to the gate leads you through sandstone towers and ancient forests. It is a path that requires some effort, but every step is rewarded with crisp air and panoramic views that open up far above the treetops. From the upper viewing platforms, the entire region is at your feet—from the surrounding rock cities to the distant peaks in Germany.
It was here, on the bridge leading to the ice castle, that key scenes from The Chronicles of Narnia were filmed, adding an extra layer of mystique to the landscape.
The Reality of Visiting: Hřensko and Logistics
Pravčická Gate is located in the strictly protected first zone of the National Park and cannot be reached by car. The starting point is the village of Hřensko, which is notorious during peak season for a critical lack of parking spaces and high fees. Furthermore, if you visit independently, you must hike the same trail back to your parked car.
Winter at Pravčická Gate
Important Note: From November to March, the Pravčická Gate area is only open on weekends (Friday–Sunday) from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Trails can be icy and very slippery. During this period, we recommend our Winter Tour instead, which focuses on locations with safe year-round access, such as the Bastei Bridge and Tisa Rocks.
