Pravčická Gate: How to Visit Europe’s Largest Natural Stone Arch
The symbol of Bohemian Switzerland and Europe’s largest sandstone arch. What you will see, the entry fee, how to get there and why you cannot walk on the arch.

Pravčická Gate (Pravčická brána) is the largest natural sandstone arch in continental Europe and the symbol of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park. The arch frames a clear view straight through the rock, with the historic Falcon's Nest chateau tucked beneath it and a ring of viewpoints looking out over the sandstone country toward the German border. It is the single most famous sight in the region — and, because it sits deep in the park above the village of Hřensko, one that rewards a little planning.
What makes Pravčická Gate special
The arch spans 26.5 metres at its base, with an opening 16 metres high and a band of rock just 3 metres thick at its narrowest point; the top platform stands 21 metres above the ground below. Those figures make it the largest natural rock arch in continental Europe and a Czech national natural monument. Like the rest of the region, it is built from sandstone laid down around 90 million years ago, when this was the bed of a shallow sea — and carved into its present shape by water, wind and frost ever since.
Why you cannot walk across the arch
For most of the 19th and 20th centuries, visitors could climb onto the arch itself. That has been banned since 1980: foot traffic accelerated erosion and the span narrowed by almost a metre, so it was closed to protect what remains. Today you admire it from below and from the surrounding viewpoints rather than from on top — which, from the terraces beside the Falcon's Nest, is arguably the better angle anyway.
The Falcon's Nest chateau (Sokolí hnízdo)
Directly beneath the arch sits the Falcon's Nest (Sokolí hnízdo), an alpine-style chateau built in a single year in 1881 by Prince Edmund Clary-Aldringen, who owned the estate and turned the gate into one of Europe's earliest tourist attractions. It once housed the family's important guests; today it holds a period restaurant with its original painted interiors, a small gallery and a national park information point. The area around the arch has been privately owned since the 19th century, which is why there is an entrance fee — collected, as it has been for over a century, to maintain the site and its paths.

A Narnia filming location
The gate and its surroundings are also one of the genuine filming locations used for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The same sandstone scenery appears nearby at the Tisa Rocks — two of only a handful of authentic Narnia locations in the region.
How to get to Pravčická Gate
The arch sits about 3 km from Hřensko, the village at the mouth of the national park near the German border. From Dresden, Hřensko is about a 45-minute drive; from Prague, allow roughly an hour and three quarters. The classic approach is on foot from Hřensko along the red-marked trail: a stretch beside the road to the Tři prameny junction, then a steady forest climb — around 45 to 60 minutes uphill in total. A second route runs from Mezní Louka. Parking is in Hřensko (paid, and expensive on summer days), and seasonal buses (lines 434 and 438, plus a summer shuttle) run to the Tři prameny stop if you would rather skip the road section.
Opening hours, entrance fee and the best time to visit
The main season runs from April to October, when the area is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00. In winter (November to March) it opens on weekends with shorter hours and reduced services. The entrance fee to the Falcon's Nest area is about 125 CZK for adults and 50 CZK reduced (children, students, seniors), around €5 — and it is worth knowing that payment is cash only in Czech crowns, with no card terminal or ATM nearby. For the fewest people, arrive early: the trail and viewpoints fill up from late morning through the afternoon in summer. Spring and autumn give clearer light and far thinner crowds.
Good to know: If you visit independently, bring enough Czech cash for the entrance fee and parking — neither takes cards, and the nearest ATM is back down in Hřensko.
Visiting as part of a guided day trip

The tour handles the drive, the paid parking and the timing — you arrive ahead of the worst crowds — and pairs the gate with the German-side highlights such as the Bastei Bridge in a single day. If you would rather see it without the logistics, you can check the day trip from Dresden.
