High above the Elbe River, the Bastei Bridge spans a group of sandstone towers that rise straight out of the forest. The contrast between the steep cliffs, the deep valley and the narrow bridge makes the place feel unlike anything else in the region.
From the top you get long, open views of the Elbe Canyon and the rocky landscape that stretches across Saxon Switzerland. It’s one of the reasons this area has been attracting visitors for centuries.
The bridge sits in the middle of Saxon Switzerland National Park, part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. It’s only a short drive from Dresden and close to the Czech border, with several viewpoints nearby where you can see the bridge from different angles.
A bridge shaped by landscape and history
The name Bastei comes from the word “bastion,” a reminder that these rock towers once formed part of the Neurathen Castle - a medieval fort built directly into the sandstone.
The stone bridge you see today dates back to 1851, replacing an earlier wooden version. It connects several of the rock towers and makes it possible to explore the remains of the old castle. The unusual shapes of the surrounding rocks were formed by erosion over millions of years and give the whole site its distinctive look.
How to visit Bastei Bridge
From Dresden, the Bastei is just a 45-minute drive away. From Prague, it’s about 2 hours. Many visitors choose to combine it with other highlights of Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland National Parks on a guided day trip.

Several viewpoints around the Bastei offer different angles of the bridge and the surrounding sandstone landscape. Each spot has its own character - from popular photo points to quieter corners away from the main path.

A short walk from the main area, this lookout gives you a clear view of the Elbe Valley and the tall sandstone towers that define the region.
Basteibrücke
The classic photo angle of the Bastei. From here, you can see the stone bridge set between the rock formations and the deep valley below. It’s usually busy, but it’s the view most people come for.
Ferdinandaussicht
A slightly more distant viewpoint that shows the bridge in its full context. Because you see it from farther away, the scale of the whole rock formation becomes much more obvious.
Kanapee
A quieter viewpoint tucked off the main route. It offers a side view of the sandstone cliffs and forested slopes — a good choice if you prefer to avoid crowds.
When to visit Bastei Bridge
Morning mists rising from the Elbe create a fairytale atmosphere. The busiest time to visit is midday, so we recommend visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon for a quieter experience.
Autumn offers golden forests, and in winter the snow-covered rocks transform the area into a true winter wonderland, making the landscape feel truly magical.
